The Forest Activities Festival will take to the grounds of The Speech House Hotel on Sunday 23 April 2017, offering locals and tourists alike a wealth of indoor and outdoor pursuits to try and showcasing some of the best of what the Forest of Dean has to offer!
We are delighted to announce that Andy Lewis MBE will be opening the Festival.
Andy who lives in Lydney lost his leg at just 16 years after a serious motorcycle accident. Instead of giving up after this life changing incident he has worked relentlessly to challenge himself and to stay fit and focused and become the best he can be. Andy competed as a Paratriathlete, & is Paralympics Gold Medalist.
Whether you’re hoping to lead a healthier and more active lifestyle or simply looking to take up a new hobby, there will be everything from archery, mountain biking, climbing walls, rocket science and bush craft to cookery, photography, golf and throwing pots on offer from a whole host of local businesses.
Some of our most popular activity providers will be at the event including Go Ape, Pedalabikeaway Forest Hills Golf Club, Taurus Crafts, Positive Impact, Whitemead Park and Forest of Dean Adventure.
Quirkier activity stands such as Artspace will invite you to try your hand at trapeze and circus skills, The Forestry Commission will be showcasing their new Gruffalo app, Foresters’ Forest will be launching their five year delivery stage whilst raising awareness of what makes the Forest of Dean special in terms of its built, natural and cultural heritage, there will also be lots of crafty acivities to try.
Displays, demonstrations and entertainment will be held during the day from The Sealed Knot, and Thai boxing from Master Sken Academy Or if you’d rather a less adrenaline fuelled excursion, try taking part in Walking football at the Freedom Leisure stand.
Music will not be missed out with performances from some local groups including Djabot, a Forest based African Drumming group taught and led by two fantastic Senegalese drummers, Arona Lo and Oumar Sagna. They are a community group bringing together people of all abilities and backgrounds who enjoy sharing their passion and dedication to this vibrant, infectious drumming sound, which lifts spirits and souls. They will be performaing and running a workshop if you want to try it out for yourself! We also have the Ukes Av Azzard performing as well as clog dancing, morris dancing and some fabulous community choirs.
Sports fans will be able to join the RFU will have a stand which will feature a fun passing challenge testing peoples passing accuracy, they will have plenty of freebies to give away.
Innovative and original artists, makers and designers showcase and sell their work in our arts & craft marquee with some art based workshops available to take part in including an opportunity to throw a pot or paint a pebble!
The Forest Showcase, the largest food festival in the area will be hosting their own food hall and dishing out delicious local produce. The showcase will include an eclectic mix of local food producers alongside some of the best street food you will find in the area, so come along to try, taste & buy! Local beers, cheese, chutneys, ice creams and delicious cakes will all be on sale so bring your shopping bags.
The very popular dog show will be returning at 2pm, organised by Forest of Dean Dog Rescue. Categories will include Handsomest male dog, Prettiest female dog, Best puppy (under 1 year), Best Veteran (>9years), Best Rescue dog, Dog the judge would most like to take home. Bring your pet pooch along & enter on the day.
Forest Wellbeing is an exciting new development for the Forest Activities Festival
happening for the first time this year, in the Speech House marquee.
Think of it as a chill-out area where you can go to relax, and find out about some of the wonderful activities which promote relaxation, health and wellbeing in the Forest of Dean including Float in the Forest & the Cosmic Teapot! The area will also have a series of sessions taking place throughoput the day from deep relaxation in 10 minutes, Iyengar yoga, auricular therapy, creative visualisation, neurokinetic therapy, stress busters for the busy, & energy medicine.
With the chance for visitors of all ages to explore everything the fairytale Forest of Dean has to offer, whilst raising heart rates and excitement levels to boot, the Forest Activities Festival looks set to be a real highlight in the calendar for families in particular, so come along & have a go!.
